Clinical Pharmacy involves the practice of pharmacy and pharmaceutical care and is one of the most rapidly developing areas of the pharmacy. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is at the forefront in developing rigorous clinical programme designed to drive the profession of pharmacy forward in the future.
Objectives
To produce clinical pharmacist capable of providing specialised pharmaceutical services in hospital and other clinical enviroments.
To train pharmacist to be confident and knowledgeable to work together with other health care providers to optimise patient treatment outcome.
Entry Requirements
Bachelor Degree with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) above 3.00 in a related field from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) or other universities approved by the Senate.
Bachelor Degree with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) above 2.75 in a related field from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) or other universities approved by the Senate and working experience of more than a year in the related field.
Foreign students who intend to write their thesis in English or who intend to enrol into graduate programmes conducted in English are required to obtain a minimum score of 600 for the TOEFL or a Band 6.5 for the IELTS examinations(minimum individual band of 6.0).
Curriculum
The programme is conducted in two semesters (approximately 12 months). In the first semester, students will follow theoretical courses related to Clinical Pharmacy Practice, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacotherapeutics, Biostatistics and Research Methodology. In the second semester, students will follow theoretical courses related to pharmacotherapeutics of specific body systems and special groups.
Students will also develop their clinical skills through clinical clerkships either compulsory or elective. For compulsory cleckships courses (Pharmacotherapy in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Paediatrics and Intensive Care) will be offered for both semesters. Students are required to register two compulsory cleckship courses (Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Parenteral Nutrition, Radiopharmacy/Nuclear Medicine/Oncology, Pharmacotherapy in Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Surgery) which will be offered in both semesters. However, students are only required to choose two elective cleckship courses throughout the programme. Approximately 20% of the students' time will be spent for research related to quality use of medicine and clinical pharmacy.
