ABSTRACT

Graft co-polymerization of monomer styrene onto cotton cellulose by the mutual irradiation technique was carried out using gamma ray from a 60Co source. Effect of styrene monomer concentration, irradiation atmosphere and pretreatment to cotton cellulose fabric with acid, alkali and several ionic salts respectively on the degree of grafting have been studied. The highest grafting seems occurred at 35% of styrene concentration. It has been found that irradiation atmosphere also affect the grafting yield especially in the presence of gases, which can act as radical scavenger. Pretreatment to cotton fabric with acid, alkali and ionic salts yield different results and depend on ions existed in the system.
