The Following Had Contributed to the Very Life of Chemistry Department, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
Achmad Amiruddin, Drs(ITB), PhD(Kentucky). Professor Dr Achmad Amiruddin joined the department in January 1970, on loan from ITB. He was one of the three pioneer backbones of the department when it started its maiden session in May 1970 in Pantai Bharu campus. He was the Acting Head of the department in 1970/71 and became the Head of the Department during the next session. Professor Dr Achmad Amiruddin concluded his contribution to the department, in preliminary administration and in physical chemistry lectures, in December 1973 and returned to Indonesia. |
Akram Che Ayub, BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD (Lough). Dr Akram joined the department in 1972 as a tutor. He began his lecturership in January 1977. Being a chemical engineer, he, then an Associate Professor, dutifully joined the newly formed Chemical Technology Unit in the faculty in January 1978, and thus left the department. |
Ahyar Idris, SmSn (UKMalaysia), PhD (Lough). Dr Ahyar joined the department in 1981 as a tutor. He began his lecturership in 1985, for several months, then left the department to join private sector, in April 1985. |
Anderson, Christopher G., BSc, PhD (Utah). Dr Anderson, an American Peace Corps, joined the department in early 1975, for a few months until June. |
Arisol Alimuniar, SmSn (UKMalaysia), PhD (Durham). Dr Arisol joined the department in 1979 end. He began his lecturership in September 1982 and lectured in polymer chemistry. Dr Arisol introduced to the department 'the talk of the town' chitin-chitosan research, since 1983, the first of such research scenery in the country. In 1994 when the faculty formed the Material Science Programme, he, then an Associate Professor, opted to man the programme. He eventually left the department and the University in July 1994 to join a private entrepreneurship. |
Blackburn, Robert, BSc, PhD (Durham), CChem, MRIC. Dr Blackburn, from Chemistry Department, Salford University, UK, joined the department in February 1976 on the bilateral IUC-UKM staff scheme. He lectured in radiochemistry. Dr Blackburn left the department in August 1976. |
Bookhari Annuar, BSc (Hons) (Otago), Dip Ed (Sec Teachrs College Auckland) MSc, PhD (La Trobe). The late Dr Bookhari joined the department in 1971 as a tutor. He started his lecturership in 1977. His greatly needed service, in organometallic chemistry, was unfortunately shortened by a brusque leukemia, the illness which took him forever from this department, and the earthly life, in June 1981. |
Bowen, H.J.M., MA, DPhil (Oxon). Dr Bowen was a visiting professor, beginning July 8, 1976. He left the department on December 22,1976. |
Card, Roger J., BA(Hope College), MSc, PhD (Iowa State). Dr Card joined the department in 1975, lecturing in organic chemistry. He served the department for two sessions. Dr Card left the department in April 1977. |
Danz, John Stanley, BSc(Calif Tech), PhD(MIT). Professor Danz, a visiting Fulbright scholar, joined the department in May 1975. He lectured in physical chemistry. Professor Danz left the department in October 1976. |
Fitton, Allan, O., BSc, PhD (London), CChem, MRIC. Dr Fitton, from Chemistry Department, Salford University, UK, joined the department in August 1976 on the bilateral IUC-UKM staff scheme. He lectured in organic chemistry. Dr Fitton left the department in July 1977. |
Harjoto, Drs (ITB). Drs Harjoto, an inorganic chemist joined the department for one half session until December 1974. |
Howden, Merlin E.H. Dr Howden was a visiting professor, from Macquaire University, Australia, for three months beginning 30 November 1972. He was the second in the scheme for the department. In his tenure, Dr Howden lectured a polymer chemistry paper to third year students. Before leaving the department, he gave a lot of suggestions resulted in stronger cohesiveness of the department. |
Isjrin Noerdin, Drs(UIB), PhD(ITB). Prof Isjrin Nordin, an analytical chemist from ITB began his presence in the department in November 1972 as a visiting professor for three months, the first for the scheme in this department. He later joined the staff rank for the 1973/74 session. Under his supervision, the first honours thesis in the department, carried out by the fourth year student Mohd Jelas Harun, was submitted in February 1975. Prof Isjrin left the department April 7, 1977. |
Ismono, Drs(ITB). Drs Ismono, an inorganic chemist, joined the department in 1975. He left after one half months, in May. |
Jamjan Rajikan, BSc (Hons) (UNE), PhD (ANU), AMIC. Dr Jamjan joined the department in 1970 as a tutor, the first tutor in the department. He was promoted to a lecturer in 1975 beginning, and in May the same year, he was appointed as Head of Department. Dr Jamjan left the department in mid 1979, then an Associate Professor of solid state physical chemistry, first with on loan to USM. |
Karim Yacob, BA (NY State), MS (Rochester). Karim joined the department in 1975 as a tutor. He began his lecturership in 1977, in theoretical chemistry. In the department he initiated research on essential oils. Karim opted for early retirement in 1995 and thus left the department. |
King, Ronald, E., BS, MS (SJSU). Mr King joined the department in mid 1979 and lectured in organic chemistry. He left the department in early 1980. |
Kuehnlenz, Gary, BS, MS (PRATT Institute), PhD (Cincinnati). Dr Kuehnlenz joined the department in 1972 along with a group of American Peace Corps. He lectured in theoretical chemistry. Dr Kuehnlenz left the department in March, 1976, returning to the USA, taking along his bride, Ms. Sharifah binte Abdul Rahman, a University Administrative Assistant. |
Ku Halim Ku Bulat, SmSn (UKMalaysia), PhD (Florida). Dr Ku Halim joined the department in October 1980. He started his lecturership, in physical chemistry, in 1990. While in the department, he was also made the Deputy Director of Matriculation Centre, since 1996. Dr Ku Halim left the department in 1998 to join Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Terengganu (UPMT). |
Locksley, H.D., Dr Locksley, from North Wales Institute, UK, joined the department in April 1980 on the bilateral IUC-UKM staff scheme. He lectured in physical chemistry. He left the department after about two months. |
Mathijs Stefanus Tupamahu, Ir (Indonesia). Ir Tupamahu joined the department in 1971, on loan from Indonesia, as a senior lecturer. He left the department a year later, after teaching in full session 1971/72 in inorganic chemistry. |
Md Soot Hj Ahmad, SmSn (UKMalaysia), MSc (Salf), PhD (Manc), AMIC. Dr Md Soot joined the department in August 1974 as a tutor. He began the lecturership, in nuclear and radiation chemistry techniques, in September 1976. He left the department in January 1978, while on study leave in Manchester, to join the newly formed Nuclear Science Unit in the faculty. He rejoined the Chemistry in 1999 when sciences in UKM were restructured. |
Mohamad Saleh Suwandi, PII Dip (ITB), MS, PhD (Syr), AMIC. Dr Suwandi joined the department in 1972. A chemical engineer by training he lectured in polymer chemistry. He left the department in January 1978 to join the Chemical Technology Unit formed in the faculty. |
Mohd Ariffin Haji Aton, BSc (Hons) (Surrey), PhD (Leeds), AMIC. Dr Mohd Ariffin joined the department as a tutor in 1971. He began his lecturership in November 1975. In January 1978 Dr Ariffin, a chemical engineer by training, moved to head the newly formed Chemical Technology Unit, in the same faculty, and thus left the department. |
Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yusof, BSc (Hons) (Nat Coll Rubber Tech), MSc (Aston). Mohd Fauzi joined the department as a tutor in 1974. He left the department, in January 1978, while on his study leave for a PhD in Aston, to join the newly formed Chemical Technology Unit in the same faculty. |
Mohd Ghazali Harun, SmSn (UKMalaysia), PhD (Kent). Dr Ghazali joined the department in 1979 as a tutor. He began his lecturership in 1982 in organic chemistry. In 1995, Dr Ghazali opted to join Faculty of Resource Science in Sabah, and thus left the department. |
Mohd Lokman Kasiran, SmSn (UKMalaysia), MSc (East Anglia). Lokman joined the department in 1980 as a tutor. He coordinated almost all first year practical teaching in the department. In 1997, however, he opted for an early retirement, and thus left the department. |
Mohd Tusirin Hj Mohd Nor, BSc (NSW). Tusirin joined the department in 1976. He was transferred to the Chemical Technologi Unit, while on study leave in Australia, in January 1978, thus left the department. |
Mujiran , Drs(GAMA). Drs Mujiran joined the department for a session, beginning in May 1973. He lectured in inorganic chemistry. Drs Mujiran left the department at the end of the session. |
Murtedza Mohamed, SmSn (UKMalaysia), PhD (Brunel). Dr Murtedza joined the department in 1975 as a tutor. He began his lecturership, in organic chemistry, in 1979. Dr Murtedza left the department in 1982, to join Faculty of Science and Natural Resource in Sabah. |
Noramly Muslim, BSc, PhD (WAust), FMIC, JSM. Dr Noramly joined the department in April 1970. He was the first permanent academic staff, and was the only lecturer, in organic chemistry, together with the acting head, Professor Dr Achmad Amiruddin, when the department started its maiden session in May 1970 in Pantai Bharu campus. He became the head of the department in 1972, the the Dean of Science Faculty in May 1975. Dr Noramly left the department on 31 August 1976, then an Associate Professor, on loan to PUSPATI, and then to higher posts in the University. |
Oei Ban Liang, Drs (ITB), PhD(Kentucky). Professor Dr Oei Ban Liang, an organic chemist, joined the department in 1972, on loan from ITB. He was given the leave for a session only, and thus in February 1973 he returned to Indonesia. |
Pfeiffer, Robert, BA(Santa Clara), PhD(Cornell). Dr Pfeiffer, an American Peace Corps, and an organic chemist, joined the department in 1973. He lectured in all third year organic chemistry papers for 1973/74 session. Dr Pfeiffer left the department in February 1974. |
Ramlee Karim, BSc, PhD(Birmingham). Dr Ramlee joined the department in early 1972. A chemical engineer by training, he lectured on chemical processes of the physical chemistry papers. He left the department in January 1974 to join a private sector. |
Rasmussen, Paul W., BSc, MSc(Acad), PhD (McM). Dr Rasmussen joined the department in July 1976. He lectured in organic chemistry. He left the department in early 1980. |
Reed, Terry Oscar, BSc, PhD (Southampton). Professor Dr Reed joined the department as an IUC visiting professor of physical chemistry, for a semester until 1975 end. |
Rusli Ghani, SmSn (UKMalaysia), PhD (UMIST). The late Dr Rusli joined the department in 1979 end as a tutor. He began his lecturership in December 1982 and lectured in polymer chemistry. His badly needed service was unfortunately shortened in June 1993 by a short complication illness from a diabetes that took him away forever from this earthly life. |

He left the department in January 1978, to join the newly formed Nuclear Science Unit in the faculty. He rejoined the Chemistry in 1999 when sciences in UKM were restructured. |
Utoro Jachja, Drs(GAMA). Drs Jachja joined the department in 1972, on loan from Indonesia, for one full session until July 1973. He lectured in inorganic chemistry. |
Warf, James C., BSc(Oklahoma), PhD(Iowa). Professor Dr Warf from UCLA joined the department in the beginning of 1975/76 session, for a semester, then left to join UKMS in Sabah. During the short duration he managed to draft an inorganic manuscript tailored for the use of students in the department. It was published in preliminary edition by UKM Press. |
