Abstract
A solid phase preconcentration technique with the final analysis using
ICP-OES was developed for the analysis
of lead, cadmium, copper, nickel and
manganese in drinking water. Three different adsorbents namely commercial
Chelex 100 (i.e. the polystyrene-divinylbenzene with imidodiacetic acid functional group), Amberlite
XAD-4 resin coated with ammonium pyrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) and the C18-silica
gel chelated with 4-(2-pyridilazo)-resorcinol (PAR) were evaluated for this purpose.
For each adsorbent, adsorption study was carried out at optimized conditions in
terms of sample solution pH, volume of elution and the flow rate. The parameters
investigated include recovery, extraction efficiency, accuracy, precision, method detection
limit, limit of quantitation, adsorption capacity and
the reuse potential of the adsorbent.
Result shows that the Chelex 100, with the recovery ranged from 85-118%, is the
best adsorbent for the analysis of Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni and Mn at the metals concentration
ranges of 10 to 400 pgll. In contrast, the C18-silica gel is only found to be suitable
at pH 7 but only with the recovery of 65 to 83%. The adsorbent based on XAD-4 seemed
to selectively adsorbed Pb as much as 83% but not other metals studied.
Keywords: Metals in drinking water, Chelex 100, C18-Silica gel-APDC, XAD-4.
