TABURAN ALKOHOL LEMAK DI DALAM SAMPEL SEDIMEN MUARA SUNGAI KAPAR, SELANGOR

 

(Distribution of fatty alcohols in sediment samples of Sungai Kapar estuary)

Abstract

A total of 13 fatty alcohols (C12-C24) including branched compounds have been determined from seven surface sediment samples taken from the estuary of Sungai Kapar, Selangor which portrayed mixture sources of marine, terrestrial and bacterial activity. Generally 65% of total fatty alcohols determined were short chain compounds (C12-C20) derived from marine organisms, 14% were long chain compounds (C21-C24) input of terrestrial organisms and the rest were branched compounds from bacterial activity. C16 fatty alcohols originate from marine phytoplankton dominated all the sampling stations with concentrations ranged from 29.69 – 164.35 μgg-1 dry weight sediment and constitute 32% of total fatty alcohols. Short chain/long chain fatty alcohols ratio of each sampling stations have the value of >1; indicate higher input of marine-derived fatty alcohols. Meanwhile, Alcohol Source Index (ASI) is useful to estimate the degree of terrestrial organic matter input within marine sediments which calculated using C22/C14 and C22/C16 fatty alcohols ratios. C22/C14 ratio showed that station Kp1, Kp2, Kp5 and Kp6 have a value >1; indicates C22 fatty alcohols are dominant compounds compared to C16. But C22/C16 ratio showed that all the sampling stations dominated by C16 compared to C22. Overall it can be concluded that estuary of Sungai Kapar, Selangor dominated by short chain fatty alcohols especially C16 compounds.
