Kuala Lumpur, 6 APRIL 2011- UKM today launched a new journal to provide a platform for surgeons to publish their works for the benefit of the surgical community.
Titled The International Journal of Surgical Academia (JSA), it is headed by Associate Professor Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid as the Editor in Chief with locally and internationally renowned physicians sitting on its editorial board.
The readership is not limited to surgery per se but is also meant for all surgeons including the sub surgery specialities such as orthopaedics, obstetrics, ear, nose and throat (ENT) and many other areas where surgery is involved.
Vice Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin when launching the journal said that it was not enough for a research university to only have good learning programmes and produce examplary graduates.
It also needed to produce journals to be cited and referred to by other researchers. It was thus very important for researchers to publish their works so that they can to be referred to and cited by their peers in other journals.
She hoped JSA will further elevate UKM’s ranking internationally.
Currently there is a shortage of publications in the field of surgery in the region, despite some creative developments in surgical techniques.
JSA aims to spur publication in the field of surgery. It has a team to help young writers to break into publications in the academic circle.
Prof Dato’ Dr Raymond Azman Ali, Dean of the Medical Faculty, Deputy Deans, Head of Departments and medical practitioners attended the launching of the journal here.
