How far is UKM from the centre of Kuala Lumpur?

UKM is strategically located in the state of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.


UKM has three campuses. The main campus, which houses the university administration and most faculties and research institutes, is located in Bangi, Selangor. This attractive and green valley area of 1,096 hectares is situated 30 km from the city of Kuala Lumpur, 45 km from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and 20 km from Putrajaya.


The Cheras campus houses Faculty of Medicine and UKM Medical Centre, a teaching hospital, while the Kuala Lumpur campus comprises Faculty of Allied Health Sciences and some departments of the Faculty of Medicine.

How do I get to UKM?

Once in Malaysia, UKM can be reach via:


From the airport, take the KLIA Express Rail Link to Bandar Tasik Selatan Station. Then take the KTM Komuter to UKM Station. From there, take a short taxi ride to the specific building that you need to get to. A more convenient alternative is to take the Airport Limousine which will take you to UKM in less than an hour for about RM65.


UKM main campus is about 30 km from the centre of Kuala Lumpur and is easily accessible via the PLUS highway to the south from Kuala Lumpur and exit to Bangi.

Studying In UKM

What is the medium of instruction in UKM?

For undergraduate programmes, the medium of instruction is Malay. For postgraduate studies, the medium of instruction varies depending on the programmes.

What can I study at UKM?

Yes, all international students need to take up Malay language courses.

How To Apply

How do I apply to study at UKM?

A1

Application can be done online or manually. Please refer to the link at section 'Studying In UKM-Q2' to download the application form, application manual, procedures for submission and information on fees.

Do I need to have English qualification to apply for UKM?

A2

For your application to be considered, you need to produce evidence of English proficiency. For undergraduate programmes, UKM recognizes results from Cambridge A Level or Cambridge O Level. For postgraduate applications, you need to produce results from TOEFL or IELTS.

How can I check my status of application?

You can check the status of your application via website, telephone or e-mail. Kindly refer to the Contact Us section at the top menu. Please provide us your passport number for reference

Are there supporting documents that need to be submitted alongside with the form?

Can I apply for National University of Malaysia (UKM) if I am currently studying in another college/university in Malaysia?

No. You cannot.

Registration

Q1

Will there be UKM representatives receiving me at the airport upon arrival in Malaysia? Is transportation provided as well?

Except for the Inbound Mobility programmes, there will be no UKM representatives at the airport and no transportation provided.

Q2

How do I get an entry visa?

A2

When you have received the acceptance letter from the UKM, you should visit the nearest Malaysian Embassy or Consulate in your home country to obtain an entry visa. Once you have arrived in Malaysia, the University will obtain your student pass on your behalf from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office.

Will UKM provide me with student visa and when can I get them?

Yes. Once you are officially registered as a student of UKM, the university will assist you in obtaining your student visa.

Should I get health insurance?

You can get treatment for minor ailments at the Health Centre. You are required to subscribe to a group insurance appointed by UKM. For further enquiries regarding insurance coverage and insurance for dependents, contact:

How much does it cost to lives here?

The daily living expenses depend on the needs and lifestyle of the individual. We estimate the cost of accommodation, food, local travel, living and other personal expenses for self-supporting single student to be a minimum of RM1, 000 (USD 266) per month.


Note that if you prefer to stay off campus, you may opt to make your own arrangements from a wide range of accommodations available in the surrounding neighbourhoods: Bandar Baru Bangi, Kajang, Bangi, Serdang and Putrajaya.

Family Matters

Can I bring along my family here at Malaysia?

A1

Yes, you can but you need to obtain visas for your dependents before bringing them to Malaysia. Please discuss this matter with:

UKM does not provide family accommodation. You will need to make your own arrangement to get a family accommodation.

Is there any suitable school for my kids there?

Yes. There several international schools around Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor. Please refers the Appendix A for the list of schools.

Financial Support

Can I work at the same time I am studying here?

Do you provide any financial assistance to students?

A2

Yes, currently we offer type of financial assistance to students, Graduate Research Scheme (GRA). The offer for fully registered international students will be based upon approval of the candidate's research project by the supervisor. The remuneration is as follows:

  • Master's Programmes: RM 1,400.00/month

  • Doctoral Programmes: RM1,600.00/month
