MAGNETISM AND SUPERCONDUCTIVITY

Introduction

 

This course is regarding magnetism and superconductivity.  The first half of the semester will be devoted to magnetism and the later half will be on superconductivity.  Topics on magnetism will be covered by Prof Dr Mustaffa Hj Abdullah.  The contents of the superconductivity section is as below.

 

Contents (Superconductivity 50 %)

 

á       Zero resistance and perfect diamagnetism

á       Classes of superconducting materials

                           Conventional superconductors (metals and alloys), Chevrel phase, oxides, heavy fermions,

                           borocarbide and boronitride, inorganic, copper oxide based

á       Magnetic field penetration depth, flux quantization, coherence length

á       Type-I and Type-II superconductors, phase transition, first order and second order, entropy and specific heat,

á       Ginzburg-Landau Theory, Abrikosov vortex

á       BCS theory, Cooper pairs, isotope effect and energy gap

á       Tunneling, single particle tunneling, Josephson tunneling

á       Cuprate base high temperature superconductors

á       Material and preparation methods, electronic properties, phase diagram

á       Large scale and small scale applications.
