Background

The Fundamental Studies of Engineering Unit, initially named the Mathematics Unit of the Engineering Faculty Unit was founded in November 2003. The idea behind the establishment of UPAK has been the brainchild of Prof. Dato' Ir. Dr. Hj. Hassan Basri who at the time was the Dean of the Engineering Faculty.

Realising the need to upgrade the Mathematics Group to the Mathematics Unit as a more formal and autonomous body, to plan and make the decisions in both short term and long term frameworks, therefore this proposal was raised in the Faculty Management Council. Such a need was also issued in the Mathematic Group Workshop in the Riviera Bay Resort Melaka held on 29 – 30 August 2003. This step is thought to have come at the right time due to the fact that 15 units from 129 course units in this Faculty comprise of Mathematics-related courses.

The Mathematics Unit now better known as the Fundamental Studies of Engineering Unit is placed under the administration of Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs and is lead by a Coordinator. This unit is led by Associate Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Mohd Nopiah. The Unit of Fundamental Studies of Engineering has been made the platform towards the development of teaching and research in the field of Engineering Mathematics.
