Second Arctic Expedition and Activities

The second research expedition to Husafell, Iceland was on 21 February - 4 March 2009. At this late winter time (more snowfalls, sandstorms, cold and windiest), the UKM person responsible  to work in this expedition, which has been done excellently by Dr. Wayan Suparta. The main work for the second expedition is as follows:
  • Due to the GPS antenna and meteorology system damaged by the dust storm off Iceland on 7 October 2008, the main work was to rectify any damage to the system.
  • The work also maintained the GPS receiver and the meteorological systems.
  • The systems were now equipped with a UPS to keep the electricity problem.
  • Automation the system, now the data were automatically stored into the FTP address. The data can be downloaded anywhere, anytime and any bird as long as available the internet connection.
  • To discuss further research collaboration with SIUI representative (Prof. Dr. Gunnlaugur Bjornsson) to possibly install new equipments at Snorri's  house.

First Arctic Expedition and Activities

The first Malaysian Polar research was conducted in Northern hemisphere started from 2008 until now. A scientist from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was pointed their measurements at Husafell observatory owned by NIPR Japan. This project was realized through University Research Grant UKM. The first expedition has been done by Dr. Wayan Suparta and Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mardina Abdullah on 2 -14 September 2008 with works as follows:
  • Sent the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between UKM and National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) Japan and between UKM and Science Institute University of Iceland (SIUI).
  • To install and setup the GPS system and a broadband meteorological sensors at Husafell station, Iceland.
  • To test, validate and collecting the GPS and meteorological data.
  • The research is at aimed to quantify the total electron content (TEC) and the precipitable water vapor (PWV) toward understating the upper-lower atmospheric coupling and space weather prediction through an excellent conjugate pair between Iceland, Arctic and Syowa station in Antarctica.
