1. Postgraduate Diploma in Economics
The objective of this programme is to offer opportunities to graduates of the Bachelor of Economics and related programmes who do not possess sufficient prerequisites to pursue the Master of Economics to gain greater knowledge in the field of economics. The programme of study which is by coursework enables students to learn economics more comprehensively. This programme also aims to produce graduates who can think maturely and have the capacity to apply economic theories to address current problems.
Category of Candidates
Candidates wishing to pursue this programme may do so on a full-time or part-time basis. Applications must be made through the Centre for Graduate Management.
Period of Study
The period of full-time study is two (2) to four (4) semesters, while part-time study is three (3) to five (5) semesters.
Terms for Acceptance
Candidates who possess the following qualifications are eligible to apply for this programme:
- Bachelor of Economics from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or other institutions of higher learning recognised by the Senate; or
- Other qualifications equivalent to the Bachelor of Economics from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or other institutions of higher learning recognised by the Senate.
Programme Structure
This programme is by coursework only. To be eligible for the Post-Graduate Diploma in Economics, a student must have followed and passed 30 units of coursework comprising the following courses:
Core courses 12 units
Elective courses 18 units
Students who possess qualifications other than a Bachelor of Economics degree may be required to follow and pass all or part of the courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics and Mathematics at the undergraduate level.
Change of Status from Diploma to Master of Economics
Candidates pursuing the Post-Graduate Diploma in Economics may be considered by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee for a conversion of their status to Master of Economics if they obtain a minimum CGPA of 3.00 and obtain gred B or better for EX6014 Microeconomics, EX6024 Macroeconomics and EX6034 Econometric Methods Candidates who are allowed to convert their status of study from Post-Graduate Diploma to Master of Economics may transfer all credits taken under the Post-Graduate Diploma with the recommendation of the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee. The transfer of credits comprises transfer of both units and grades.

2. Master of Economics
Master of Economics ProgrammeThe objective of this programme is to equip students with advanced economics knowledge. The mode of study, which requires students to follow and pass the courses and academic writing, reflects the emphasis placed on strong theoretical foundations. This programme produces graduates who are skilled in terms of economic theories, empirical applications and conducting research. In addition, this programme aims to mould graduates into academics, researchers and formulators of economic policies.
Period of Study
The period of full-time study is two (2) to six (6) semesters, while part-time study is four (4) to ten (10) semesters.

Conversion of Status from Master to Doctor of Philosophy
Candidates pursuing the Master of Economics programme may be given consideration to convert their status of study to Doctor of Philosophy if they are supported by the supervisor/Post-Graduate Committee and recommended by the Graduate Studies Committee.Candidates who are allowed to convert their status of study to Doctor of Philosophy may transfer all units obtained under the Master of Economics course. The transfer of credits comprises transfer of both units and grades.The period of study of candidates for Master of Economics whose conversion of status to Doctor of Philosophy in Economics has been approved will be taken into consideration in the calculation of period of study for the doctoral programme.

3. Doctor of Philosophy Programme
The objective of this programme is to guide students to become high calibre economists so that they can generate and disseminate knowledge in the field of economics. The courses taught and the preparation of the thesis or dissertation will enable students to acquire greater knowledge of economics and carry out scientific research. The award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy takes into account the comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the students and their ability to carry out independent research in their respective areas.
Programme Structure
This programme comprises the following two modes of study:
- Coursework and dissertation
- Thesis
To be eligible to be conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, students must have followed and passed 60 units of coursework comprising the following courses:
