Satu Upacara Mengadap YTM Tunku Panglima Besar Dato’ Seri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz binti KDYMM Tunku Sultan Haji Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, Felo Diraja LESTARI UKM, telah diadakan pada hari Sabtu 21 Ogos 2010 bertempat di Istana Pagar Ruyung, Kuala Lumpur. Rombongan Upacara Mengadap ini telah diketuai oleh Prof. Dr. Mazlin bin Mokhtar, Pengarah LESTARI, bersama-sama Prof. Madya Dr. Che Aziz Ali (Timbalan Pengarah LESTARI), Prof. Dr. Mohd. Shafeea Leman (Felo Utama LESTARI), Dr. Sharina Abdul Halim (Felo Penyelidik LESTARI) dan Puan Nurul Safaniza Che Ani (Penolong Pendaftar LESTARI). Visit from Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), Makassar, Sulawesi, Indonesia

 

On 2nd August 2010, A delegate of 20 post-graduate students and management staffs from Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), Makassar, Sulawesi, Indonesia had paid a visit to LESTARI. The objectives of the visit are to be introduced to the role of LESTARI in sustainable development in Malaysia and to find a mutual interest where LESTARI and UNHAS can collaborate in academic and researches in future. The delegate had been entertained by the Deputy Director of LESTARI, Professor Shafeea Leman and Principle Research Fellow, Dato’ Shaharuddin Mohammad Ismail. Several topics had been discussed which are related to agriculture and forest management in Malaysia. The discussion are concluded with an exchanged of token of appreciation from both LESTARI  and the delegate representatives.

Discussion and Joint Collaboration with IUCN-ADB on Various Basins across Asia Pacific - Langat River Basin

 

Satu sesi perbincangan dan kerjasama di antara Institut Alam Sekitar dan Pembangunan (LESTARI) menerusi Kumpulan Penyelidikan Pengurusan Sumber Air Bersepadu (IWRM) dengan pihak International Union for Conservation of Nature-Asian Development Bank (IUCN-ADB) telah diadakan pada 30 julai 2010 bertempat di Bilik Mesyuarat LESTARI, UKM. Perbincangan ini dihadiri oleh Ms. Lisa Idris dan Mr. Binayak Das yang merupakan wakil daripada IUCN Southeast Asia Regional Office yang berpusat di Bangkok, Thailand. Prof. Dr. Mazlin Mokhtar, Pengarah LESTARI, mempengerusikan sesi perbincangan ini dan turut dihadiri oleh Prof. Dr. Salmijah Surif, Ketua Kumpulan IWRM serta beberapa lagi ahli kumpulan serta pensyarah, pembantu penyelidik dan pelajar di LESTARI. Perbincangan ini memfokus kepada Lembangan Langat yang merupakan subjek yang hendak dikaji bersama dan kolaborasi jangka masa panjang antara pihak LESTARI dan IUCN. Lembangan Langat juga merupakan kajian kes yang penting kerana merupakan salah satu lembangan sungai HELP (Hydrology for the Environment, Life and Policy) yang telah diiktiraf oleh UNESCO-IHP sejak tahun 2004. Aplikasi penggunaan Geographic Information System (GIS) dalam pengurusan sumber air dan pemantauan perubahan guna tanah di Lembangan Langat juga aspek penting yang turut diketengahkan dalam perbincangan ini.

  MESYUARAT EXCO UNESCO-IHP MALAYSIA BIL.3/2010
 

Pada 29 Julai 2010 yang lepas, Institut Alam Sekitar dan Pembangunan (LESTARI) telah dipilih untuk menjadi tuan rumah bagi mesyuarat EXCO UNESCO-IHP Malaysia yang ke-3 bagi tahun ini. Mesyuarat yang di pengerusikan oleh Pengerusi Jawatan Kuasa Kebangsaan Malaysia IHP, Dato’ Ir. Hj Ahmad Husaini bin Sulaiman yang juga merupakan Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran Malaysia. Mesyuarat ini turut dihadiri oleh Dato' Nordin Bin Hamdan, Timbalan Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran, Dr. Mohamed Roseli bin Zainal Abidin, Pengarah Pusat Serantau Tropika Lembap (HTCKL), Ir Hj Hanapi Mohamad Noor, Pengarah Bahagian Sumber Air & Hidrologi dan beberapa ahli daripada jabatan dan agensi lain diantaranya Jabatan Perhutanan, Kementerian Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan (KPKT) dan Jabatan Meteorologi Malaysia (JMM).  Pada mesyuarat tersebut juga telah dilakukan pemilihan dan pelantikan EXCO UNESCO-IHP Malaysia yang baru bagi tahun 2010-2012 dimana Institut Alam Sekitar dan Pembangunan (LESTARI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia telah dipilih sebagai salah satu EXCO, bersama-sama dengan Agensi Nuklear Malaysia, Kementerian Tenaga, Teknologi Hijau dan Air (KeTTHA) dan Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), serta EXCO tetap UNESCO-IHP Malaysia iaitu Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran (JPS), Humid Tropics Centre Kuala Lumpur (HTCKL), Suruhanjaya Kebangsaan UNECSO Malaysia (SKUM) dan Kementerian Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi (MOSTI).

LESTARI menerima penghargaan khas
 

Pada 29 Julai 2010,LESTARI telah menerima Sijil Penghargaan Anugerah Khas Agensi Luar sempena Hari Anugerah Cemerlang 2010 SMK Tunku Putra bertempat di Dewan Langkawi Geopark SMK Tunku Putra Padang Matsirat,Langkawi. Majlis ini telah dirasmikan oleh Yang Teramat Mulia Panglima Besar Dato’ Seri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Binti Ke Bawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tuanku Sultan Haji Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah. Turut hadir di dalam majlis tersebut adalah Yang Berbahagia Pengarah Pelajaran Negeri Kedah, Yang Berusaha Pegawai Pelajaran Daerah Langkawi, pengetua dan guru besar sekolah-sekolah Daerah Langkawi, badan-badan kerajaan dan swasta serta persatuan ibu bapa,guru dan warga SMK Tunku Putra. SMK Tunku Putra adalah sekolah yang telah dipilih sebagai sekolah angkat Geopark pada tahun 2008.Pemilihannya sebagai sekolah angkat Geopark berdasarkan kedudukan lokasinya yang terletak dalam persekitaran Geopark Gunung Mat Chincang. Dengan moto, Reaching Out For Glory, dan visinya untuk menjadi sebuah sekolah yang membentuk insan bersahsiah terpuji, berketerampilan, dan berbudaya cemerlang, SMK Tunku Putra telah berjaya sebagai Sekolah Contoh Daerah pada tahun 2008 dan seterusnya menjadi Sekolah Contoh Negeri 2010.Matlamat baharu sekolah ini adalah berusaha mencapai untuk menjadi Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi menjelang tahun 2013.

Exhibition in conjuction with pinnacle ceremony of National Consumer Month 2010

 

From 24th-25th July 2010, LESTARI had joined an exhibition in conjuction with pinnacle ceremony of National Consumer Month 2010 which held at Dataran Pahlawan, Bandar Hilir, Melaka. The objectives of this exhibition is to nurture  positive awareness among consumers and all levels  of society and to create understanding and co-operation between consumer, dealer and the goverment representatives in consumerism aspect. LESTARI had exhibited information about the new international signages for hazardous chemical management, UKM Lestari, waste management and information about LESTARI in regional sustainable development. Books published by UKM and LESTARI also exhibited to promote sustainable development to consumers.

6th Round Table Dialogue of the Malaysian Network for Integrated Management of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances for Environment and Development (MyNICHE-6)
 


The 6th Round Table Dialogue of the Malaysian Network for Integrated Management of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances for Environment and Development (MyNICHE-6) was held at Oriental Crystal Kajang on 26 July 2010. The MyNICHE-6 was jointly organised by Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Environmental Management & Climate Change Division, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE). ‘Harmonizing Chemical Governance with Sustainable Livelihood’ was selected as the theme for MyNICHE-6 and participants for MyNICHE-6 includes representatives from government agencies, chemical associations, NGOs and academia. Issues such as Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), Environmentally Hazardous Substances (EHS), Basel Convention and chemical safety in consumer products were discussed in MyNICHE-6.

Seminar “Sustainable Development and Sustainability: Understanding Concepts, Context, Models and Measurements”

 


On 22nd July 2010, LESTARI had conducted a seminar  on “Sustainable Development and Sustainability: Understanding Concepts, Context, Models and Measurements”. The main aim of the seminar was to be a platform for researchers and fellows of LESTARI to share their thoughts and ideas in better undestanding various concepts, context, models and measurements of sustainable development. The presence of Prof. Emeritus Dr. Peter John Peterson,an adjunct professor of LESTARI to share his perspectives and views on sustainable development was the highlight of the seminar. This seminar was chaired by the Director of LESTARI, Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar and participated by fellows and researchers of LESTARI.

National Hydrology & Environment Conference 2010
 


On 23rd and 24th June 2010, LESTARI had participated in the National Hydrology & Environment Conference 2010 (Persidangan Kebangsaan Hidrologi & Alam Sekitar 2010, HIDRAS)organized by Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FKAAS) and UNESCO-IHP at the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. The main aim of the conference is to discuss various topics and issues relating to hydrology and environment as well as knowledge and experiences sharing between the academic and industrial sectors. Dr. Rahmah Elfithri, a fellow of LESTARI had participated in the conference as a presenter. In conjunction wth the conference, an exhibition had been organized and  participated by LESTARI. Information and publications of LESTARI were exhibited to the participants of the conference.

UN-CECAR Curriculum Development Working Group Meeting

 

Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI), UKM hosted UN-CECAR Curriculum Development Working Group Meeting held during 3-5 June 2010 at Oriental Cristal Hotel, Kajang, Selangor. Representatives from the United Nations University Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU-ISP), Japan, Climate Change Institute of Australian National University, Australia, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences of Indian Institute of Technology, India, International Center for Advanced Research on Global Change and  Meteorological Department of Vietnam National University, Vietnam and Faculty of Engineering of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia were present in that meeting. Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar and Prof. Dr. Joy Jacqueline Pereira of LESTARI have represented Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in that meeting. A master level curriculum on ‘approaches to adaptation” and “science, impacts and vulnerability’ was designed in this meeting and is scheduled to be tested through a short course to be organized by United Nations University, Japan by next September 2010. Climate change experts from member universities of the United Nations University will conduct this course.

CDU Visiting Research Fellowship (June – August 2010)-

Sharina arrived in Darwin to take up a 3 month Visiting Research Fellowship (June – August 2010) during which she will undertake a research project at Charles Darwin University in ‘Cooperative Management of Protected Areas in Malaysia and Australia’.  She will be examining current joint management practices in State, Territory and Commonwealth parks and is interested in learning about common key success factors as well as learning and sharing best practices in public education and heritage conservation practices. As part of her fellowship she will work closely with Arturo and Natasha and visit parks in the NT. She will also be preparing a publication, a research program proposal on co-management research activity for UKM Langkawi Geo Park in Peninsular Malaysia.This fellowship is part of a larger three university research program (CDU, UKM and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak) to look at Joint Management of Protected areas in Malaysia and Australia.

On 10th May 2010, a discussion session was held in LESTARI with Dr. Natasha Stacey, Senior Research Fellow from School of Environmental Research, Charles Darwin University (CDU). The discussion was chaired by the Director of LESTARI, Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar and attended by fellows and researches of LESTARI. Areas of expertise and chances of collaboration in research, particularly on sustainable livelihood and co-management were discussed in the one hour session.

Perbincangan antara Penyelidik LESTARI dan IBM berkenaan 'Computer Model for a Sustainable City'

 

Pada 27 April 2010 bertempat di Bilik Mesyuarat LESTARI telah diadakan satu sesi perbincangan yang disampaikan oleh Mr. Fabiano Di Tomaso seorang Project Management dan Jurutera IT dari International Business Machines (IBM) Switzerland mengenai “Computer Model for a Sustainable City”. Penganjuran majlis yang merupakan kerjasama di antara Pusat Pengajian Umum (PPU) dan Institut Alam Sekitar dan Pembangunan (LESTARI) ini turut membincangkan perkara mengenai “A Vision of Sustainable City”. Turut hadir di dalam majlis tersebut adalah  Dr. Rahmah Elfithri dari LESTARI, Dr. Mashitoh Yaakob dari PPU, Dr. Nangkula Utaberta dari Jabatan Seni Bina, Fakulti Kejuruteraan dan Alam Bina  UKM serta beberapa penyelidik LESTARI.

INAUGURAL DATO’ ISMAIL AWANG FORESTRY FORUM

 


On 19th April 2010, LESTARI, with the support of Datin Harison Ahmad and the family of Allahyarham Dato’ Ismail Awang organized the Inaugural Dato’ Ismail Awang Forestry Forum. This forum is organized annually and this year, the chosen theme is on Tropical Timber Trade and Sustainable Forest Management, Bridging Sustainability. The objectives of the forum are i) to illustrate the importance of timber trade for Malaysia economy; ii) to explore diverse thinking in understanding timber trade and sustainable forest management, iii) to identify synergy between timber trade and sustainable forest managemen; and iv) to prioritize research needs to enhance timber trade and sustainable forest management. Over 100 participants from government agencies, private sectors as well as NGOs, academic and research institutions had joined the  forum. < More Photos>

4TH INTERNATIONAL UNESCO CONFERENCE ON GEOPARKS 2010 ,9-15 April 2010, Awana Porto Malai Langkawi,Kedah
 


The 4th International UNESCO Conference on Geoparks 2010 (ICG4) was held in Southeast Asia’s very first global geopark, Langkawi Global Geopark, MALAYSIA on 9-15 April 2010. Langkawi is one of the rare island geoparks in the world comprising 99 islands, possesses the region’s oldest rocks and the most complete Palaeozoic geological history. The conference was officiated by Her Highness Tunku Panglima Besar Dato’ Seri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz binti KeBawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tuanku Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, Royal Patron of Langkawi Geopark. The themes for the conference are Communicating Geoheritage; Stakeholder Involvement; Governance and Networking; Geotourism and Geoparks; Geoparks and Sustainable Development; New and Aspiring Geoparks; Advancement of Geoscience within Geoparks and Geoheritage Conservation. 3R CULTURE ENVIRONMENTAL CARTOONS FROM JAPAN,
19-21 March 2010, Jusco Cheras selatan

 

As a continuation of the 3R event that took place previously at Pusanika, UKM, another exhibition was also held at Jusco Cheras Selatan from the 19th to 21st of March, 2010. This event was organized by Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) and the Sustainable Ecosystem Management Research Group of UKM in collaboration with Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment (FKAB) UKM, Japan Environmental Exchange (JEE), Alam Flora Sdn. Bhd., Sony EMCS (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. and the Japanese delegation led by Prof. Hiroshi Takatsuki. Kind support and cooperation was also given by JICA, Kyoto University, Ishikawa Prefectural University, JFKL, Aeon Co. (M) Bhd and Nippon Foundation.  The main aim of this exhibition is to raise the environmental awareness of the Malaysian public and for the exchange of practical environmental ideas between Japan and Malaysia. The main feature of this exhibition is the presence of cartoonist High Moon, a.k.a Professor Emeritus Dr. Hiroshi Takatsuki and his display of 20 environmental cartoons highlighting the plight of the environment today.

Symposium on Harmonizing Environmental Considerations with Sustainable Development Potential of River Basin In Conjunction with Malaysia World Water Day 2010

 


Research and development for integrated river basin management in Langat River Basin is fueled once again by UNESCO-IHP led Hydrology for Environment, Life and Policy (HELP) Programme by bringing national and international stakeholders in its symposium on Harmonizing Environmental Considerations with Sustainable Development Potential of River Basin in conjunction with Malaysia World Water Day 2010 held on 24-26 March 2007 at the Prince Hotel, Kulala Lumpur. The Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI), UKM has taken the leadership to organize this symposium in Malaysia. This symposium has introduced the HELP programme to the experts of this region and created scope to enrich their knowledge on implementation challenges within the local conditions of river basins. It has created momentum among stakeholders of Langat River Basin that hopefully continue until we get the recognition of an Operational HELP Basin under UNESCO. Majlis Pelancaran Buku Geoforest Parks; Hanging Garden of Langkawi
 
Pada 12 Februari 2010 telah diadakan Majlis Pelancaran Buku 'Geoforest Parks; The Hanging Garden of Langkawi'. Pelancaran ini telah disempurnakan oleh Ke Bawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Negeri Kedah, Timbalan Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Almu’tasimu Billahi Muhibbudin Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah dan Ke Bawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultanah Hajjah Haminah binti Hamidun, Sultanah Negeri Kedah Darul Aman. Pada hari tersebut juga telah disempurnakan pelancaran MyKTOURS atau Malaysia Knowledge Tours merupakan satu versi yang mentransformasikan ilmu pengetahuan daripada buku Geoforest Parks: Hanging Gardens of Langkawi kepada satu format yang mudah dicapai dan dimuat turun ke peralatan ICT yang boleh diguna sebagai tour guide. Bersempena dengan majlis ini juga, diadakan juga penyerahan sumbangan zamalah dari Dato Ir Syed Muahammad Shahabudin kepada pihak UKM yang dapat menarik pelajar pascasiswazah terbaik melakukan penyelidikan di tahap PhD. <Lanjut>
